As part of his recent trip to China, Prof Veron Ramsuran visited GenePlus Technology in Beijing, where advances in modern medicine are taking shape at the intersection of genomics, technology and precision medicine.

GenePlus is contributing to this rapidly evolving field through its work in genetic testing, next-generation sequencing and precision medicine, translating genomic science into applications that can improve how disease is understood, detected and managed. The company is a biotechnology and precision medicine business with expertise spanning genomic sequencing, genetic testing, molecular diagnostics and precision oncology, and its work highlights the growing role of large-scale genomic technologies in advancing more personalised approaches to healthcare, in which an individual’s genetic information can support more informed disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

During the visit, Prof Ramsuran engaged with scientists and researchers working at the forefront of genomic technologies. The discussions provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives, explore shared research interests and gain insight into the technologies shaping the future of genomics.

For Prof Ramsuran, the visit created a valuable link between research in Africa and technological advances in China. These shared scientific interests present opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaborative research, particularly as African researchers work to ensure that African populations are better represented in global genomic studies.

China–Africa Joint Laboratory Programme

The visit also forms part of a broader scientific relationship between China and South Africa through the China–Africa Joint Laboratory Programme, involving Beijing Ditan Hospital and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The initiative brings together expertise from institutions across both countries, creating opportunities to share knowledge, technologies and approaches to addressing important health challenges.

Such connections are increasingly important as genomics becomes a truly global science. Bringing together researchers, technologies and genetically diverse populations from different regions can generate discoveries that are not only scientifically significant, but also more relevant to the communities they are intended to serve.
