Explore Prof Ramsuran's Journey

Prof. Veron Ramsuran is an internationally recognized genomic scientist, immunogeneticist, and precision medicine researcher whose work is transforming our understanding of infectious diseases, cancer, and human health. As an Associate Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Associate Scientist at CAPRISA, and Guest Researcher at the National Cancer Institute, he leads cutting-edge research at the intersection of genomics, immunology, artificial intelligence, and translational medicine.

Following his PhD in Genetics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Prof. Ramsuran completed advanced training at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, where he investigated the genetic mechanisms underlying HIV control and immune responses. His pioneering work on Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) biology and host genetics has led to major discoveries in HIV research, including landmark publications in leading scientific journals.

His research focuses on understanding why some individuals are naturally protected against diseases while others are more susceptible. By studying the human genome, epigenome, and immune system, his laboratory aims to uncover biological mechanisms that can be translated into new diagnostics, therapies, vaccines, and precision medicine solutions. His work spans HIV, tuberculosis, cancer, maternal and child health, pharmacogenomics, and advanced immunotherapies.

A passionate advocate for African genomics, Prof. Ramsuran is committed to ensuring that African populations are represented in global biomedical research. His research programs leverage large-scale genomic datasets, next-generation sequencing technologies, and artificial intelligence to address some of the most pressing healthcare challenges facing Africa and the world.

Through global collaborations spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America, Prof. Ramsuran has secured major international funding and established multidisciplinary research programs that bridge discovery science with real-world healthcare impact. His vision is to harness the power of genomics and precision medicine to improve health outcomes, reduce health disparities, and deliver innovative solutions that benefit communities worldwide.
