A closer look inside one of the world’s major genomics organisations
During his recent trip to China, Prof Veron Ramsuran visited BGI Genomics in Shenzhen, gaining a closer look inside one of the world’s major genomics organisations and exploring opportunities for future scientific collaboration.
Headquartered in Shenzhen, BGI Genomics has grown into a global provider of genomic sequencing, bioinformatics and precision medicine solutions, with services extending across more than 100 countries. Its history is closely tied to a defining moment in modern genetics: BGI Group was established in 1999 to participate in the Human Genome Project, contributing to the sequencing of approximately 1% of the original project.
During the visit, Prof Ramsuran toured BGI’s laboratories, where he was introduced to the organisation’s large-scale genomic capabilities and the technologies supporting its sequencing and research services. BGI’s work today includes whole-genome sequencing, RNA sequencing and other next-generation sequencing applications, supported by bioinformatics and high-throughput genomic technologies.
BGI Genomics at a Glance
For Prof Ramsuran, whose research centres on human genetics and genomics, immunogenetics and precision medicine, the visit provided an opportunity to engage with a genomics environment operating at significant scale while considering how these technologies and expertise could support future research.
Importantly, the visit also opened discussions around potential scientific collaborations. These conversations explored opportunities to connect expertise, technologies and research interests, with the potential to strengthen international partnerships and advance genomics research with relevance to diverse populations.
