The University of KwaZulu-Natal is one of the top universities in South Africa and ranks among the top 500 globally. The Schools in the College of Health Sciences have a long-standing tradition in research and teaching, with vibrant postgraduate research programmes, and are now inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.

The programme provides exceptional postdoctoral candidates the opportunity to conduct scholarly inquiry, publish, and grow knowledge in academic development practice, teaching and learning in higher education. Candidates who hold a PhD in Health Sciences, or a relevant PhD in an allied discipline, are encouraged to apply.

Key Details

Value per annum: R280,000 for South African citizens
R200,000 for non-SA citizens
Fellowship term: One-year contract, renewable subject to performance and funding
Closing date: 31 August 2026
Start date: September / October 2026

Eligibility Criteria

A doctoral degree obtained within the last five years, not previously funded by UKZN
At least three first-author papers published in Q1 rated journals
Willingness to lead and contribute to the research productivity of the hosting school
Able to carry out other duties consistent with a postdoctoral fellowship
Commitment to UKZN’s policies, rules, procedures and codes of conduct for postdoctoral fellows
Once appointed, a minimum of two research papers per annum in DHET/ISI accredited journals, preferably Q1 rated
Non-SA candidates must hold a valid work permit or South African visa; study visas are only accepted where conditioned for postdoctoral duties
